SAAM Poetry Slam
Overview
Since April is also widely recognized as National Poetry Month, the
National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) encourages campus
programs to organize or participate in a SAAM Poetry Slam event in their
community. Poetry Slams are events in which poets/participants perform
their work in front of an audience, with a dual emphasis on writing and
performance. Becoming increasingly popular since the 1980s, Poetry Slams
are an excellent way to raise awareness of an issue and get community
involvement. Poetry Slams are open to community members who register and
want to use their voice, creativity, and passion to help end sexual
violence in their community and across the nation. The theme of the 2006
event is It's About Time to Prevent Sexual Violence. Participants must
Speak Out on the topic of sexual violence, its awareness, and/or its
prevention. The top three winners of each registered Poetry Slam event
from across the nation may be featured in an anthology compiled by the
NSVRC. Additionally, organizations that register their event will
receive free posters from the NSVRC to publicize their event.

I'm wondering if other folks out there will be hosting slams on their
campuses as well, i'm at Dartmouth & plan to host the slam on teh 6th of
April - are there any other NH or VT schools on this list serv that may want
to collaborate our energies and efforts and make this a huge deal if
possible? there are many ways that i'm thinking that this could be done, we
could either host one huge slam; or the winners from our schools of the slam
could then compete again and we could "crown" that person(s) with the NH/VT
SAAM Slam Champ of 2006. Any thoughts?
