POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Duke University
Division of Student Affairs
Assistant Coordinator,
Sexual Assault Support Services
The Duke University Women's Center seeks to fill the position of Assistant
Coordinator of Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS). This position
reports to the SASS Coordinator and is responsible for assisting with
educational programming, direct services and administration of sexual
assault support services on campus. Schedule will vary and regularly
include nights and weekends.
Nature of Responsibilities
The Assistant SASS Coordinator works closely with the SASS Coordinator, SASS
Student Staff Programmers, and Sexual Harassment And Rape Prevention (SHARP)
undergraduate peer educators to design and implement preventative education
programs on sexual and relationship violence for the Duke University
community. When the SASS Coordinator is unavailable, s/he also provides
occasional advocacy, short-term crisis support, information and referral for
students affected by sexual and relationship violence and their families and
friends. The Assistant Coordinator also helps with a variety of
administrative projects as needs arise.
Specific Duties
* Advise the SHARP peer educators by driving recruitment, ongoing
professional development, work-group meetings, and the relationship between
SHARP and Duke Student Health. Also assist with training for new peer
educators, planning, marketing, and evaluation of small group SHARP programs
year-round including two broad SHARP programming campaigns annually.
* Manage two large-scale programming weeks aimed at heightening awareness,
reducing risk, and increasing prevention among various student communities
at Duke. Includes event planning (e.g. of speakers, performances,
programs), advertising, fundraising, volunteer coordination and evaluation
of impact.
* Directly manage 2-5 SASS Student Staff Programmers.
* Serve as a resource to individual students and student groups interested
in sexual and relationship violence issues on campus.
* Develop print and on-line educational materials and assist with the
ongoing maintenance of the SASS website.
* Serve on committees and task forces as necessary to help the University
address issues related to effective prevention education and to shape a
comprehensive response to sexual and relationship violence.
* As a back-up to the SASS Coordinator, provide advocacy, short-term crisis
support, information and referral to students affected by sexual and
relationship violence and their families and friends (only approximately 5%
of job responsibilities).
* Assist with other SASS and Women¹s Center projects as needed.
General Qualifications
Master¹s degree in health education, counseling, social work, education, or
related field required. Two to three years of experience including at least
one year in program development and/or teaching and one to two years in
sexual violence prevention and services (paid or volunteer) are strongly
preferred.
Specific Skills and Competencies
Position requires thorough understanding of sexual violence in a college
community and ability to work with both men and women to plan and implement
prevention programs. Knowledge of and experience with peer education models
are assets, as is some expertise in marketing, public speaking, program
design and program evaluation. Strong interpersonal, communication,
organizational and writing skills are essential. Must possess strong
listening and empathy skills and be able to provide mentoring to students
and short-term crisis support and referrals to survivors in an ethical
manner.
