The Effectiveness of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Programs
by Rebecca Campbell (November 2004) provides a brief summary of the
structure and functions of SANE programs as they currently exist in the
United States. This paper presents the current research on the
effectiveness of SANE programs in three areas:
1) providing care in an
empowering setting that addresses survivors' emotional and medical
needs
2) improving the quality of forensic evidence collection relative
to the methods traditionally used in hospital emergency departments 3)
increasing prosecution rates in their community, due to the meticulous
documenting of injuries and physical evidence. This paper also provides
recommendations for future research.

Hello colleagues, and happy new year,
I am writing to start a dialogue about how you keep record of the students
you are seeing.
Obviously, one thing many of us are concerned about is the possibility of
having our notes subpoenaed in the event of a criminal trial. Some of you
who are mental health counselors have more protection than those of us who
are not. Please share ideas about how you have chosen to keep records
regarding your students, and how much information you keep in written (or
electronic) form. Currently, we keep very minimal written records but this
also hinders tracking of meaningful demographics such as times of year when
we see more students, groups that appear to be disproportionately affected,
etc.
This has been on my mind since reviewing the information about TACT
("thorough assault case tracking"), a tool being marketed by a company
called InfoSysBiz (infosysbiz.com). While certain aspects of the tool are
appealing, the possibility of having it misused is worrisome too.
Thoughts?
