Hello, all!
I am responding to an earlier request for rape prevention speakers. I know of one in particular who you should DEFINITELY check out. He is sure to challenge, support, educate and engage your audience in a way that most speakers do not (and I have seen quite a number of sexual assault prevention speakers in my career).
He is Keith Edwards, and his program is titled "She Fears You." It is really remarkable. Keith fuses current events such as the Kobe Bryant trial, and the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake incident with everyday incidences. He talks about small and large ways "rape culture" is supported on campus, and ways in which students can work against it. He touches on racism, sexism and homophobia, and the way all oppression is linked to sexual assault. Students can't help but become engaged/inspired/angered by the discussion. As Keith says, how can you NOT get angry about sexual assault? I have seen his program several times and have hosted him twice. I will continue to bring him in as part of training for my students and/or for campus-wide programming as long as he is available. Keith has extensive experience lecturing around the country. He is extremely professional, articulate, and easy to work with.
Keith Edwards comes to you with my highest recommendation. For more information, please contact him directly at .
If you would like to speak to me directly about my experience working with Keith, please feel free to contact me directly at , or 301.314.8227.
Sincerely,

We are currently in the process of reviewing disciplinary and
educational sanctions imposed on students found responsible for
committing acts of sexual misconduct/sexual assault. It would be very
helpful to obtain more information about how other colleges/universities
are responding to these situations. Please take a few minutes and
respond to the follow questions. You can send the responses directly to
me at:
.
Thank you in advance for any information you
can provide!
=20
1. What sanctions are available for sexual assault/sexual misconduct
cases.
=20
2. Have you developed a matrix/grid outlining specific sanctions to be
applied to particular incidents (e.g. increasing the severity of
sanctions in response to increasing severity of the act)? If so, would
you be willing to share this document?
=20
3. What sanctions are available for other (non-sexual) assault cases?
Is the same range of sanctions applied to both sexual, and non-sexual
assault cases?
=20
4. For students who are allowed to remain on campus despite being found
responsible for committing an act of sexual assault/sexual misconduct,
what "educational" and "disciplinary" sanctions are applied? Who is
responsible for providing the "educational" component.
=20
5. What is the extent of your involvement with the Athletic Department,
in terms of providing educational, awareness and prevention programs for
student athletes?=20

Again, thank you for any information you can share.

The fact that men rape is obvious, but the fact that men can end rape is often an after thought. Men Ending Rape is committed to ending rape by encouraging men to play a significant role in ending the perpetuation of a campus rape culture. "She Fears You ," to which Mollie referred, is our nationally recognized presentation offered to college audiences across the country. The program uses dialogue, activities, and a multi-media presentation so that both men and women are encouraged to be active in changing the rape culture on campus, a culture that encourages or condones rape to happen. The program identifies for men what they have to gain from ending campus rape - that they are no longer perceived as potential rapists but as individuals capable of entering caring and emotion-based relationships.
We also works to help college campuses establish successful student organizations, designed to address men's role in ending rape. As many of you know these organization's can have a significant impact on the campus culture through education, activism, and advocacy. When college men see that they are important and crucial in ending rape they rarely have places to engage in meaningful action and benefit from the support of other like-minded men and women. Student organizations can be effective and empowering places, especially for men, to engage in education, activism, and advocacy to end rape and the perpetuation of a rape culture. Men Ending Rape will explore the theoretical and philosophical foundations of these student organizations as well as share resources and strategies critical to establishing and supporting this type of organization on campus.
