It is nice to know we have a few people on the list serve who have the
media savvy, life experience and moxy to mix it up with the big league
media players. Some of us may balance financial or career incentives to
make that call or others may be thinking about grabbing 15 minutes of
fame. These are risk-reward bets where the odds are heavily with the
house. If you pull it off you may be the new talking head expert for the
trial of the "weak". If you fail you can always list it on your resume
and send your victim back to counseling.

The advice given about coaching and not answering is right on the money.
What that advice reflects is expert knowledge that we are sending a
person into a potentially toxic and unsupportive environment over which
they have little if any control. Oprah's crew separated our student from
her advocate support early in the process. Editing manages to pull
remarks completely out of context and chronological order ala Michael
Moore style docu-dramas. I would like to hear how we get final say over
editing decisions? But of course that is not possible.

We try to teach our students about carefully extending trust and how
trust must be earned and sustained. The media would struggle to provide
evidence of its knowledge of this issue, as well as struggle to provide
examples of its ability to care for and protect the well being of those
they focus on. In effect we are telling ourselves we can "use them" even
though we don't trust them, to get out our message. We attempt to
justify the risk as worth the potential reward. The reward we seek is
usually "informing others and making a difference". There is no pay, no
promise and ultimately little opportunity to inform others and make a
difference unless you already have some public presence and celebrity.
You can anticipate they will request a recent photograph of your victim
to see if they fit certain predetermined criteria. The general
shallowness of the process serves as a strong reminder their agenda is
different than ours.

I am not convinced talk shows hosts and pseudo-investigative news piece
"reporters" have sufficient knowledge of the issues and victim trauma
responses to pull out and present knowledge in such a way as to impact
choices or behaviors of their viewing demographic. It is difficult to
stop criminal activity when you focus your attention on the victim and
not the perpetrator. There are plenty of "Nationally Recognized Experts"
that could provide endless examples and the ugly details of any crime
the media could imagine. Media will not be devoid of talking heads if we
decline to provide our student victims. Violence against women topics
can be approached from a variety of directions. It is the media who has
decided "good television" is a young woman crying, sharing her pain and
telling us what she would do differently. These are formula people who
need our help to step outside of their rigid little boxes.

Personal-story focus helps support the belief that these are personal
crimes not public issues. A few of these sexual assault or stalking
shows pale in comparison to the overt social learning and graphic
physical violence against women available 24/7 in any media venue you
wish to access. Throw in a Google search and you can view anything your
heart desires. In fact violence against women and their objectification
is the norm in media land. Are you willing to bet a couple of college
stalking victims talking on a profit based television show will be given
a forum to make a difference? I apologize for weighing in again on this
issue. My concerns are for these student's well being and national
television is a seductive and powerful opponent.
