Dear Colleagues,
I agree with Molly's latest email to the SAPC list serve that the guys with Men Can Stop Rape do great work, I applaud their efforts and encourage people to use their materials as part of a comprehensive approach to rape prevention. I doubt that they wish to be listed as the alternative to NO MORE. Personally I believe that both organizations do great work and folks would do well to use the resources of both organizations. In our complex field, most often, the more we do to end rape, the better, and the more different and valuable approaches we can use, the more folks we can reach. I have profound respect for David Sloane Rider, Neil Irvin, Jonathan Stillerman, Patrick Lemmon, and all the folks I've interacted with at MCSR over the years and hope they and their approach continues to spread in its influence as we work together toward the same goal.
It is indeed true that several folks have written critiques of my work in and through NO MORE; the vast majority of whom have been men who authored other rape prevention programs -- as with all opinion pieces, its important to consider the source. And in fact others who are not men marketing their own programs have found weaknesses in the approach I authored in The Men's Program and NO MORE's videos. That is of course natural -- not everyone will like every approach, I of course understand that, and have been given many chances to re-learn that lesson over and over again in the last 11 years.
A few years back, I partnered a diverse group of folks in the rape prevention field, especially including an openly gay male involved in the movement to end rape, to re-shoot our video from a gay-affirmative and non-homophobic perspective. The former copy that I used was indeed quite troublesome and contained homophobic comments. I regret ever using it. Thanks to many folks who helped me see every level of that. Our newer video, as most have actually seen would agree, is a profoundly different and better way of showing men how rape may feel, and helps them translate that empathy into long-term changes in attitudes and likelihood of raping. As a recent book by University of Illinois Professor Paul Schewe has affirmed, The Men's Program remains "...the only program to report clear long-term (more than 7 months) positive effects of an intervention..." My latest research that will come out in the next year or two in the journals shows that 100% of fraternity men and athletes in my latest study reported long-term attitude and/or behavior change as a direct result of seeing a "One in Four" group present "The Men's Program." In the 3 or so years since most critiques have been published, the program and video have been changed and improved so that it is now better, more inclusive, and indeed more effective than ever.
If anyone has read anything about the program -- pro or con -- and would like more information, I have many files already written that I can send to you at your request. Also if anyone is curious to evaluate the program for themselves, I am happy to provide a free review copy of one of our videos of the entire program being presented by peer educators with our police video dubbed in for you to make your own informed decision. As always, I am happy to email or talk with anyone who would like to engage in thoughtful and collaborative discussion. For more information, I encourage you to see my website, www.nomorerape.org.
Thank you.
