In response to the question about videos from the Illinois coordinator, there
are several (including Tough Guise, with Jackson Katz), but I want to
strongly
recommend a new one by the Media Education Foundation. It is called Spin the
Bottle: Sex, Lies, and Alcohol, and it features Jackson Katz, Jean Kilbourne,
and students from W. Mass area colleges. Its focus is on the binge drinking
culture on campuses, which we all know is linked to sexual assault. But there
is very specific commentary on the connection between drinking and sexual
assault. I am no longer connected with MEF, but am now teaching at one the
colleges where students were interviewed, Westfield State College. I showed
it
to two classes, and it was applauded both times. One guy said, "Everything in
that video is true." Its strength, as good as Jackson and Jean are, is the
presence of students testifying about the booze culture. That really draws
students in and is a great discussion starter.
They offer free previews, but you'll want to get this one, so if you have any
of that end of fiscal year money, get it. More info. at www.mediaed.org.
