Position Announcement

Position:    Project Coordinator, Alliance for Sexual Assault Prevention and Education (ASAPE) Project

Department:    Office of Student Life and ASUO Women’s Center

Reports to:    Assistant Dean of Students and Associate Director, Office of Student Life

Academic Rank:    No Rank

Term:        Full time, 12 months (1.0 FTE).

Dates of Employment:    Two-year limited term position funded by the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), and U.S. Department of Justice (Spring 2003-Spring 2005)

Annual Salary:    $30,000 + comprehensive benefits package

General Description of Position

The project coordinator for the Alliance for Sexual Assault Prevention and Education (ASAPE) project will provide programmatic coordination for the $186,000 grant funded by the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), U.S. Department of Justice, implemented by the Office of Student Life and ASUO Women’s Center.  The grant will fund two sexual and dating violence prevention initiatives at the University of Oregon:  the Sexual Wellness Advocacy Team peer education internship program and the Community Engagement Project.

The Sexual Wellness Advocacy Team peer education internship program is comprised of 6-10 graduate and undergraduate student interns who are trained in sexual violence prevention and education.  The interns, in turn, deliver 50-minute educational presentations on the issues of sexual and dating violence to their peers—primarily students living in university housing, first-year students and/or students involved in fraternities and sororities.  Our goal is to offer educational programs that are innovative and creative; to meet students where they are and encourage open dialogue; and to focus on healthy relationship skill building.

The Community Engagement Project involves creating a collaborative team of University staff, community service providers and student leaders in an effort to measure the values, beliefs and behaviors of students within two pilot communities (i.e., the Greek system and University Housing).  This information is used to craft prevention and education programs that address the unique needs of the students in those communities.  The primary goal of this approach is to develop dating and sexual violence prevention strategies that work for the community as defined by the members of that community versus as defined by outside service providers.

The project coordinator will serve as the direct contact for these programs as part of a two-year, grant-funded project focused on violence against women.  The primary responsibilities are to provide coordination for all project activities, and to effectively work with grant partners (ASAPE Advisory Committee) and other grant multidisciplinary team members.  Under the supervision of the associate director of Student Life, the project coordinator will fulfill the following duties:

Responsibilities and Duties

* Collaborate with ASAPE Advisory Committee and multidisciplinary grant team to design effective, on-campus education and prevention programs to address violence against women on the UO campus.
* In collaboration with the peer intern advisor, manage the Sexual Wellness Advocacy Team peer education internship program.  May include updating an existing training curriculum, course syllabi and manual for student interns;  co-facilitating a weekly class;  intern recruitment; actively soliciting feedback and implementing program improvements based on the feedback.
* Oversee the Community Engagement Project (CEP). Includes recruitment of student leaders; scheduling and facilitating monthly meetings between all CEP team members; collaborating with grant partners to create training sessions for all team members; ensuring confidentiality of data collection and storage; and soliciting feedback on a regular basis from all team members.
* Strengthen student participation in the response to sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and domestic violence.
* Assist the grant evaluator in data collection and execution of evaluation component efforts.
* Serve as primary contact for all grant partners.  Convene and coordinate meetings and activities with grant partners.  Focus on strengthening existing relationships and promoting additional collaborative relationships with both on and off campus grant partners.
* Draft reports and other materials related to grant project.
* Provide information obtained from the project to other interested institutions of higher education.
* Understand, promote and commit to laws, polices and procedures that aim to reduce violence against women.
* Attend all required training institutes and participate in monthly teleconferences.
* Work cooperatively with the Office on Violence Against Women and their technical assistance providers in the development and implementation of grant activities.
* Assist Project Director in ensuring university compliance with all special conditions included in the grant award.
* Ensure that all financial and progress reports are submitted in a timely manner.

The successful candidate will have the following: strong leadership and group facilitation skills, expertise in violence against women issues, strong verbal and written communication skills, a willingness to mentor and teach students, experience using innovative approaches to address sexual and relationship violence, and the ability to be self-directed in program development and management.  Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, or related field, and a minimum of one year experience in the field of sexual assault prevention, education, or response on a professional or volunteer basis required.  Master’s degree preferred.  Greek Life or Residence Life program experience on a university campus is also preferred.  This position will require travel to attend training institutes.  This position will also require some evening/weekend hours.  The project coordinator reports to the assistant dean of students/associate director in the Office of Student Life.
