2007 Student Scholarly Paper Competition

General Information

The Center for the Study of Race and Law at the University of Virginia is pleased to announce the inaugural Race and Law Student Scholarly Paper Competition.  The objective of this initiative is to encourage and recognize outstanding scholarship pertaining to race and law by law students in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  We hope to expand the geographical scope of the program in future years.

·       The Center’s first annual student scholarly paper competition is open to submissions from all current, full-time law students at accredited law schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia as of Spring 2007 (Class of 2007 graduates are eligible). 

·       The authors of the three winning papers will be invited to present an oral summary of their work at a special program to be held at the University of Virginia in the fall of 2007.  Copies of the papers will be made available for distribution to those attending the presentation.

·       At the presentation of the papers in the fall of 2007, the top winning author will receive a prize of $1,000.  The two runners-up will each receive a prize of $300.

·       The winning paper will be strongly considered for publication in the Virginia Journal of Social Policy & the Law.  Authors are not obligated to publish in this journal.

Conditions and Submissions

·       Papers must address any issue(s) concerning race and law. 

·       All papers must be student-authored, original, and not published before 2008.  Submitted papers, whether or not selected for recognition, may be subsequently published as arranged by the authors in a publication of their choice. 

·       Papers written for school credit are acceptable. 

·       Papers may have been revised on the basis of review by others, including faculty, attorneys, and journal editors.

·       Papers must be no more than forty-five (45) double-spaced pages, including footnotes and any appendix.  Papers must have at least one (1) inch margins; at least twelve (12) point Times New Roman font text; and at least ten (10) point footnotes which should appear on the same page as the referenced text.

·       Papers must use standard Bluebook citation format.

·       Submissions must also include a cover letter indicating the author’s name, law school, graduating year, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, as well as the title of the paper, and must provide a brief abstract/summary of one hundred (100) to two hundred (200) words explaining the issue(s) you are addressing and how your paper makes an original contribution to existing legal scholarship.

Anonymous Submission
To facilitate our anonymous review process, the paper, including title page and footnotes, must not contain any references that identify the author or the author's school.  Please confine your name, affiliation, acknowledgments, and any other identifying information to a separate cover page.  Do, however, include the manuscript's title on the first text page of the paper.
Submission Deadline

All papers must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word or PDF format to by July 1, 2007.

Judging

Papers will be judged on originality, clarity of  exposition, cogency of argument, analytical rigor, scholarly carefulness and balance, value and use of research, and impact on existing legal scholarship.  The review committee must be satisfied that a paper’s quality deserves this special recognition.  The Center is not obligated to select any paper.

Selection

        Winning authors will be notified by September 1, 2007.
